Rent Assistance payment timing and indexation

Rent Assistance is not paid as a separate deposit on a separate day. It is included with your regular fortnightly payment, so it arrives when your main payment arrives, and it appears as part of that payment in your payment summary. If your main payment is delayed, reduced, or suspended, Rent Assistance follows it. That is the practical meaning of Rent Assistance being an add-on payment rather than a stand-alone one.
Fortnightly payment
All Rent Assistance figures are fortnightly, because the payments it accompanies are fortnightly. A weekly rent must be doubled and a monthly rent must be converted (monthly × 12 ÷ 26) before it is compared with a fortnightly threshold. The same fortnightly rhythm applies to reporting: a rent change takes effect from the date Services Australia processes the update, and the payment summary for the following fortnight is the place to check that the new amount is right.
Indexation: 20 March and 20 September
Services Australia updates Rent Assistance rates on 20 March and 20 September each year, in line with the Consumer Price Index. At an indexation date, the thresholds and maximums move, and your Rent Assistance is adjusted to the new rates. A person whose rent is already above the rent for the maximum payment will see no change at indexation if the maximum itself has risen only slightly, or will see the new maximum apply. A person on a part payment will usually see a small change, because the threshold has moved. The figures on this site are the 20 September 2026 rates, and the next scheduled update after them is 20 March of the following year. No rates beyond the current indexation period are stated on this site, because they have not been set.
Other adjustments
Indexation is not the only adjustment. Services Australia also adjusts Rent Assistance when your rent changes, when you move, when your income changes, when the payments you receive change, and when your family circumstances change. Any of those adjustments can be larger than an indexation movement, and any of them depends on you reporting the change, as explained on the reporting changes page. If your payment summary shows a change you did not expect, check for an indexation date first, then check whether a reported change has just been processed.
Checking your payment
Your Centrelink online account through myGov shows your payment summary, including whether Rent Assistance is included and at what amount. Compare that amount with the calculation on the how it is calculated page, using the rent and household details on your record. If the figures do not match, the most likely causes are an out-of-date rent figure, an incorrect household or sharer assessment, or a change that has not yet been processed. Each of those has a different fix, so identify the cause before seeking a review.
